Emotional Understanding through Animated Representation: Developing Empathy to Recognize and Understand the Emotions of Others

About this Training

In this workshop, participants will learn about the fourth domain in Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence model: Empathy. Utilizing situations from fantasy-oriented animated series created in the last decade which explore emotional and identity development through diverse representation, participants will review the ways that many of the protagonists in these series often succeed in their missions not through battle, but by coming to understand the emotional and physical needs of others. The session will provide examples of how antagonists in these series are often revealed as multi-dimensional characters, and that by empathizing with their plight, and assisting them, protagonists are better able to resolve conflict.
