About this Training

A common thread lies within the genres of science fiction, video games, comics, super heroes, and similar geeky topics - overcoming adversity and personal growth. Through the content, characters, and adventures experienced via geek media, people can find inspiration to defeat their own super villains in life. The goal of this training is to develop cultural competency surrounding geek media and its ability to empower clients through the stories they tell and experiences through consumption. If you’d like to understand how to help your clients find their superpower via clinical empowerment, please join us for a training led by Dr. Sarah Sawyer on the topic. She is a pioneering expert in geek psychology - specializing in identity exploration, application of geek media, and LGBTQIA+.

Sarah Sawyer

Sarah A.H. Sawyer, PsyD, is a licensed mental health counselor, associate clinician, and post-doctoral fellow at Sound Psychopathology and Assessment in Seattle, Washington. She specializes in integration of geek culture in the therapeutic setting, working with adults and youth, and the application of favored fictional anthologies as a therapeutic technique via role-modeling and analogous experience discussion. She has authored a clinical article for iThrive Organization, spoken on multiple academic panels, and is a moderator for Take This, a nonprofit whose mission is to decrease the stigma, and increase the support for, mental health in the game enthusiast community and inside the game industry.
