When We Play Games: An Overview Using Personality and Gaming Motivation

About this Training

Videogames have been used over time for many reasons by game players of varying types. While recent years have seen an increase in clinical concerns related to gameplay habits, multiple studies have identified the positive impacts games represent as a means of demonstrating problem solving, imagination, and creativity. During the experience of playing a videogame, the player is often able to customize their experience to the point where personality characteristics often become observable from a research perspective. Researchers exploring the motivations for playing various styles of game have identified many insights with potential applications for expanding the way clinicians can understand players of video games whether they present for treatment or turn to games as a positive expression of their being. This presentation seeks to define connections between personality research, gaming motivations, and insights which could serve useful for deeper understanding of game players with across numerous styles of play.

Daniel Kaufmann

Dr. Kaufmann is a full-time faculty and current Content Development Lead for graduate programs in Mental Health Counseling and Counselor Education & Supervision at Grand Canyon University. Dr. Kaufmann also serves as a founding member of the Faculty Advisory Board for the Video Game Disorder clinical training programs through the IGCCB and is leading the taskforce for the APA to review the criteria for consideration of Internet Gaming Disorder in future DSM-5 updates. His research covers areas from video games, personality theory, process addictions, online education, and counselor development. His podcast, The Gaming Persona, is published weekly and seeks to share various insights related to psychological connections in the play of video games. He is also a contributing member and content creator for the counselor training efforts for problem gambling issues for the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling and the Arizona Division of Problem Gambling.
